NOURISHIAN TRAINING

NOURISHIAN TRAINING

The Nourishian Training is a life skills program for young people ages 16-21, offered as a summer intensive at the Rainier Beach Urban Farm and Wetland. Through experiential learning in an outdoor classroom and kitchen, a cohort of 10 students will develop critical skills in meal planning, budgeting, cooking, gardening, financial literacy, and mental health. The program fosters individual health and community wellness through self-efficacy, nurturing relationships, and cultural expression.

Students will engage in hands-on learning, weekly field trips, guest speakers, and guest cooks representing diverse cultures. They will also receive seasonal produce from local BIPOC farms to practice cooking at home. The program culminates in a community meal where students showcase their skills and share their learning.

The program was born from years of community conversations led by UCC’s program director, Leika Suzumura, who heard from Rainier Valley youth and families about the need for accessible cooking and nutrition education. Nourishian Training brings this vision to life, empowering young people with essential skills for lifelong well-being.
